Zirconium rust‑prevention coating, also known as zirconium‑based conversion coating or titanium‑zirconium pretreatment, is a chromate‑free thin‑film surface treatment widely adopted as an alternative to traditional phosphating and chromate passivation. It is applied on aluminum, galvanized steel, cold‑rolled steel and mixed‑metal components within plating, painting and general metal‑finishing production lines.

Typical Formulation
The working bath mainly contains water‑soluble zirconium salts (hexafluorozirconate), auxiliary titanium compounds, trace fluorides for surface activation, pH regulators, and wetting surfactants. No heavy‑metal chromium ingredients are included, so it complies with RoHS and environmental waste‑discharge standards. During treatment, hydrolysis occurs at the metal‑liquid interface under controlled pH, depositing an ultra‑thin amorphous inorganic film, normally 20‑100 nm thick, far thinner than phosphate layers.
Core Functions
  1. Corrosion / rust resistance: The dense continuous zirconium‑oxide barrier film blocks moisture, oxygen and corrosive electrolytes from reaching the base metal substrate, slowing galvanic corrosion and rust formation. It delivers intermediate‑level salt‑spray performance for unpainted parts.
  1. Adhesion promoter: Creates a chemically active micro‑rough surface. It significantly improves bonding strength for subsequent paint, powder coating, adhesive or over‑plating, avoiding coating delamination.
  1. Uniform treatment for mixed‑metal assemblies: Works consistently on multi‑metal workpieces combining aluminum, steel and zinc‑plated hardware, a key advantage over iron‑ or zinc‑phosphate processes.
  1. Process benefits: Operates at near‑ambient temperature, short immersion time, generates minimal sludge compared to phosphating, and reduces wastewater‑treatment burden.

Limitations

Without topcoat paint, long‑term outdoor anti‑rust performance cannot match chromate conversion coatings. Bath stability is sensitive to pH, metal ion contamination and bath loading; regular chemical analysis is required.
