An air energy heat pump, also called an air-source heat pump (ASHP), extracts heat from the outside air-even insubfreezing temperatures-and transfers it indoors for heating or reverses the process for cooling in The systemuses a compressor and refrigerant cycle similar to a refrigerator: heat is absorbed from the air via an outdoor coil,amplified by the compressor, and delivered indoors through a heat exchanger connected to radiators, underfloorheating, or a water-based system.
A reversing valve allows the system to switch between heating and coolingmodes. Air-source heat pumps are highly efficient because they transfer heat rather than generate it. Modern units candeliver 2-4 times more heat energy than the electricity they consume, with a typical coefficient of performance (COP) around 3-4 . Efficiency is measured using HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) for heatingand SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) for cooling. For example, a 10.3 HSPF unit provides 10,300 Btu of heat per kWh of electricity, compared to ~3,400 Btu for electric resistance heating. Advanced features like variable speed blowers and electronic expansion valves further improve performance
